For years, Michael Cohen had served as Donald Trump's personal attorney and fixer. In February 2019, he testified before Congress. By then, he had turned on his former boss and was revealing some of the unsavory activities he undertook on Trump's behalf, including paying hush money to a porn star to prevent her from disclosing an affair with Trump. During his testimony, Cohen also revealed another task he had performed at Trump's behest: threatening to sue the colleges Trump had attended, and the College Board, if they ever made public his college grades or SAT scores. Trump was presumably embarrassed by his academic record and apparently feared that making it public would damage his presidential candidacy, or at least his reputation. Cohen highlighted the hypocrisy in Trump's attempt to hide his academic records. Some years earlier, Trump had insisted that President Obama make his academic records public. "I heard he was a terrible student, terrible," Trump declared in 2011. "How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard? Let him show his records." Cohen's disclosure of his attempt to keep Trump's grades and SAT scores from public view attracted less attention than his more salacious testimony about paying off the porn star. But as a sign of the times, it was more consequential. What it revealed was the public significance of credentialism.
